First Light Tiny Home

Tiny homes come with a brief that’s a little different than most. Everything has to survive being trucked down the road and moved from place to place, so weight matters just as much, if not more, than finish. In First Light Tiny House, designed by First Light Studio and built by Build Tiny, we see a great example of how, with the right plywood, you can prioritise both.

Why lightweight plywood matters for tiny home builds

Build Tiny was founded by Interior Architecture graduate Gina Stevens, who built her own tiny house with her builder brother-in-law Jason Airey. After two short years, they already had another 30 perfectly formed homes to their credit.

Gina specifies plywood regularly across those builds, and weight is one of the first things she considers. Euro Poplar is Plymasters' lightest-coloured plywood, made from plantation-grown timber. With the same properties that make it useful in caravans and boats, it's incredibly well suited to weight-saving fit-outs in transportable tiny home builds.

Matching product to application

For First Light, Euro Poplar was used for the walls and ceiling, while Euro Birch Multiply, which is a harder-wearing product, was specified for the floors and stairs. The decision to make that split is one that’s worth considering on any build. Lightweight may be the overall goal, but it isn't a single spec you need to apply everywhere; instead, treat it as a starting point and weigh durability needs against it for each surface. Walls and ceilings make sense to be lightweight, but high-traffic areas like floors and stairs need to prioritise wear-resistance first.

Working with plywood on tiny homes

Gina's own experience building with our Euro plywood range echoes what you’ll read in our spec sheet. "It cuts really well, and it's less back-breaking for the guys," she says. She's also a repeat specifier of Euro Poplar for its finish: "We love the colour, and our clients do too. It has that little bit of warmth but also looks good painted."

Considerations for your transportable build

If you're specifying plywood for a tiny home, caravan or other mobile project, remember that weight doesn’t need to come at the expense of finish. Euro Poplar's combination of light weight, workability, and warm, paintable finish makes it a good starting point for walls and ceilings, layering in a harder-wearing product like Euro Birch wherever the build demands it.
